Mahler began working on the symphony in 1910, but when he passed away the following year the work wasn't fully formed. Over the years, through his sketches and drafts, other composers set about finishing the work with Deryck Cooke's completion being the most commonly performed. It was with Mahler that the superstition of the curse of the ninth was formed after Beethoven and Schubert also died after writing their ninth symphonies.
